With one release under their belt already by Akiko Kiyama and the Supra Opto Cassis EP by Canadian minstrel Pheek coming out in a few weeks, new label Lick My Deck have certainly got the right idea – good music.
Given the current popularity of ‘minimal’ music and the high volume of releases shuffling into the record shops and onto websites each week it makes for a refreshing break to hear some new minimal tracks that are sophisticated, playful and imminently playable – which is what they should be! So hats off to Akiko Kiyama, who has come up with two great tracks for this first release. “The Misidia Monarchy” is a spooky and trippy little number with a nice sense of rhythm and groove giving it the all important ‘wiggle’ factor. On the other side we have “Fungi” – a true minimal track taking in shades of electronica, house and techno all whilst maintaining a solid groove as different sounds come in and out of play. All in all this makes for pleasurable listening and dancing material with some heart and soul as well as a bit of intelligence thrown in.
For more info on the labels background – read on…
Lick My Deck was created by Shaun Soomro and Matt Jolley who have both been involved in the music industry for years although with totally different backgrounds.
Shaun’s involvement in music started at an early age as a DJ on London’s vibrant underground radio scene playing early house and drum and bass progressing through the years to become a respected club DJ. Music has been his life, following the path of production he held an internship at EMI then began working for indie label Trouble On Vinyl before taking a job at SRD Distribution and finally working for a record shop in Soho. It has shaped his future and given him the tools to turn his passion into a career.
Matt grew up in the Bristol music scene. Influenced by bands such as Massive Attack and Portishead he became an agent for film composers working on soundtracks for films such as Snatch and The Beach. Having become a fixture on the London party scene he moved into PR and began working for Top of the Pops.
A chance meeting with Shaun at the TOTP studios turned into a friendship based on their mutual love of music and curiosity sparked by their respective backgrounds and differences
After years of DJ’ing and PR they both felt the need to build something concrete and decided to combine their talents and knowledge and create something for themselves.
Lick My Deck came together pretty organically. They could both visualise what they wanted but creating it out of nothing was an enormous challenge. Starting with a name and a logo and not much else Shaun began to approach the people he most admired on the minimal house scene.
One the first people he approached was Akiko Kiyama. A Japanese artist making a name for herself in Berlin, her intelligent and intricate approach to her music reflected perfectly what Lick My Deck aspired to.
Showing great faith and belief in both Shaun and Lick My Deck she licensed some material to the label, which is when the real work began. Funded entirely by themselves they began the long process of getting distributors to believe in them too.
Shaun had to choose the first release carefully and he chose well. Akiko’s ” The Misidia Monarchy “ has been chosen by Booka Shade for their DJ Kicks compilation on K7 and JPLS asked Lick My Deck about doing the remix.
Months down the line with LMD 001 in the shops and LMD 002 Pheek’s Supra Opto Cassis EP coming out on November 5th and with JPLS and Inxec lined up for the next releases; Lick My Deck is emerging as a label focused on releasing intelligent and provocative electronic music.
