(Un)foundsound 16: Fidget -- Frayed

As one half of Flowchart (with Sean O’Neal), Fidget (aka Erin Anderson) used to describe their output as “Shoegazer Techno” and it seems that this would be equally applicable to various elements of this release. Breathy swathes of sound and ethereal tones set the pace here evoking memories of bands like Chapterhouse and Slowdive (for this reviewer at least – esp with tracks like “over, under, through”).

However, interwoven into the texture of these tracks are the subtle foundsounds and electronic rhythms whose intricate patterns and detail contrast nicely with the dense, floating layers creating a very nice dynamic.

Someone Else’s remix makes a nice change as his heavy, choppy, glitchy approach to production works superbly with this kind of smooth layered sound, especially when it’s slowed right down to a slow, heavy, wading pace…lush!

Whilst this might not necessarily be pure dance floor fodder, it doesn’t detract from the quality of the release – who said electronic music was purely for a pumping dancefloor at night? (although, i would probably slip in “spongecake remedy” or “flower ship” to a set – but then i like to indulge myself) So, get your headphones on, walk around town, take a train or stick it on the stereo at home: this is definitely music to create a mood and atmosphere, transforming otherwise normal, daily events into something altogether more dreamy.
